Inquiry provides a framework for learning. To become independent learners, students must gain not only the skills but also the disposition to use those skills, along with an understanding of their own responsibilities and self-assessment strategies. Combined, these four elements build a learner who can thrive in a complex information environment. (AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner)

Reading Comprehension Connection

This is a great site with lessons for vocabulary in context sentences, reading for understanding, reading strategy, and interactive web sites, how-to web sites, and software web sites (in all subject areas)

Reading is a window to the world.  Reading is a foundational skill for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment.  The degree to which students can read and understand test in all formats (e.g., picture, video, print) and all contexts is a key indicator of success in school and life. As a lifelong learning skill, reading goes beyond decoding and comprehension to interpretation and development of new understandings. (AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner)

Info Search: Where's the Information?
"Searching for information today is both easier and harder than it was

when your only choice was the library and its massive card catalog. More information is available than ever before, and you can access information from across the country or around the world. But finding what you want requires more skill on the part of the researcher." Tips for navigating cyberspace.

The continuing expansion of information demands that all individuals acquire the thinking skills that will enable them to learn on their own. The amount of information available to our learners necessitates that each individual acquire the skills to select, evaluate, and use information appropriately and effectively. New Quiz List for Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader High Points

Accelerated Reader

Reading is a crucial skill for academic success not only in English classes but also in social studies, science, and even math classess.  You can help your student by encouraging the to spend time each day practicing this skill.

At Captain Shreve we will continue to help students improve their reading comprehension and develop their vocabulary through the use of Accelerated Reading.  All students, freshmen through seniors, will be given a test in August or early September.  They then will begin reading books in their zone and testing on those books by computer in the library.  English teachers as well as teachers from different disciplines will be talking to students about their expectations.  One of the goals will be for students to achieve an 85% or higher on the reading tests.  Scientifically based research has proven that students who read 20 minutes a day show significant gains in comprehension, vocabulary, and in reasoning and problem-solving skills.  Look for Accelerated Books at your house and encourage your students to practice daily.

A list of Accelerated Reading tests can be found in the link above " New Quiz List for Accelerated Reader" or by clicking here.
