Chemistry in the Swamp

Chemistry classes at Captain Shreve are studying the chemistry of the swamp's water. We test parameters that affect the life cycles of the fish and plants, such as pH, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, and hardness.

The task of the chemistry classes is to recreate living conditions of the old river in a scaled down version. Our mini-swamp is a 55-gallon aquarium. Its substrate consists of actual old river bottom.
