A BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL Captain Shreve was named one of the National Schools of Excellence by the Department of Education. As a Blue Ribbon School it was recognized for excellence in Education by the President of the United States and the U.S. Office of Education.

Congratulations for Dr. Michael McCoy who was awarded the LAE Teacher Image Award for 2004. Congratulations also, to Ms. Melissa Elrod who was awarded the LAE Ancillary Image Award for 2004. Congratulations to Carolyn Murphy. She has been selected Captain Shreve’s 2004-2005 HOBY Ambassador. Lewis Billingsley has been selected as the alternate. Each year a select group of outstanding sophomores apply for this top honor. The HOBY selection committee chooses one student to represent the school at a regional leadership seminar. AS HOBY Ambassador, Carolyn will participate in this program with other sophomores from north Louisiana. The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership seminars are designed to motivate and develop future leaders. Students will have an opportunity to discuss current topics, learn more about free enterprise, democracy, and service to their community. Congratulations to Chris Hardy being selected as JROTC 1st Brigade Commander of the schools in Caddo Parish.

CONGRATULATIONS! To the Boys' Soccer
Team who won the Rebel Cup in Pineville this past weekend. The final game,
played against Pineville, was a real nail biter as it went into 2 overtimes
and was finally determined by a shootout that cycled through 11 players before
Jeremy Wimer scored the tie-breaking goal. All the players did a fantastic job,
and Coach Smith named Jeremy Wimer MVP for the tournament. Way to go Gators!!
Congratulations to Josh Holley. He was
named to the 2nd All District Cross Country
Team. Congratulations Captain Shreve Library Media Specialists, Melissa Elrod and Annette Williford. Both have earned National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Way to go Gators!

The Captain Shreve Enterprise was awarded the Best Newspaper in the State, 3rd Place. Go Gators! Congratulations to Justin Dean and Scott Hayter for being named Student Council SASC Secretaries! Congratulations to the Gator Debaters for their success at the Parkway Debate Tournament this weekend. Josel Friis, in his first tournament experience, placed 2nd in the Lincoln-Douglas division. Tarek Benyahia and Preston Yarbrough both placed 3rd in the same division, securing 3 of the 4 trophies for Captain Shreve. Preston also won 2nd place in the Jr. Extemporaneous Speaking event. Gators barely missing elimination rounds in Lincoln-Douglas with records of 3 and 1 were: Sara Hedgepeth, Torri Epperson, Jason Medcalf, Drew Johnson, and Miranda Malmay. Way to go Gator Debators! Congratulations to the Competition Cheerleaders for winning 1st Place at the Spook Night Holiday Championship held this week- end. They also received a bid to nationals! Go Gators. Senior Class President, Akeem Jones. Congratulations! CONGRATULATIONS! JR. DAVIS CUP Winners : Janie Asseff and David Irvin. Go Gators! Congratulations to Caddo Parish Schools for being awarded the Improving Literacy through Libraries Literacy Grant for 2003-2004. Instrumental grant writers from Captain Shreve High School included two science teachers, Susan Cassard and Mike McCoy and library media specialists, Melissa Elrod and Annette Williford. Dottie Wallace and Bettye Mitchell from Caddo's Library Technical Assistance were also instrumental in writing the grant which will bring over $240,000 to the parish for purchasing library books which correspond to the science curriculum. The grant also includes professional development for collaborative activities between librarians and science teachers, as well as a multimedia presentation computer to be shared by the science teachers participating in the grant. DR. MICHAEL MCCOY named Caddo Parish Schools Teacher of the Year for 2003-2004. He has also been named Louisiana PTSA Distinguished Educator.

NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED SCHOLARS: Christina Taylor, Eric Sella, James Michiels Jerome Knight has his artwork "Purple Poppies" is on display in a patient's room in the Cancer Unit (6th Floor) of the LSU Hospital. Jerome's art, along with additional art work from various students attending Caddo Parish schools, will be used on the front of note cards that the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center at the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport will sell. All proceeds will be used to further cancer research efforts. The cards and matching envelopes will sell for $10 for a box of 8 and can come in any design or combination of designs. There are currently 7 different designs to choose from.
NEAL JACKSON
has been named as the Caddo Parish nominee for the U.S. SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM for
the 2002-2003 school year. TEACHER OF THE YEAR Martha Goza, Captain Shreve special education teacher, was named Caddo Parish High School teacher of the year for 2001-2002. She will now compete for regional and state teacher of the year to be named in October. Mrs. Goza was nominated for the honor by Dr. Sandra McCalla, principal. 2001 EDUCATOR OF DISTINCTION Peggy Bennett was named Captain Shreve's Educator of Distinction by the PTSA. She teaches Chemistry. Mrs. Bennett was also named State Educator of Distinction by the State PTA. The award was given to only 10 educators from across the state. This honor was given as a result of her outstanding accomplishments in the field of education and her service to youth in our community. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL HONORED Renee Neugart, Assistant Principal of Instruction, was named Louisiana Assistant Principal of the year by the Louisiana Association of Principals and by the National Association of Secondary Principals. She was honored at meetings of the Caddo Parish School Board, the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, and at the annual meetings of the state and national principals organizations. RIFLE TEAM UNDEFEATED The Captain Shreve Rifle team, under the direction of MSG Elbra Cole, was 11-0 for the season. The team was undefeated for the past two seasons. Emphasis is placed on safety and responsible marksmanship. ENVIRONMENTAL CLASSES TAKE FIRST PLACE The Gator Environmental Science classes, with the aid of other Captain Shreve clubs, collected 9,828 phone books to place in first overall in the school-wide phone book recycling drive. | ||||||||||||||||||
