ART A student may elect five (5) years of visual arts studies. The student selecting art as an elective should have either some natural artistic ability or a strong desire to develop artistic skills and knowledge. Learning focuses on creative expression through assigned projects, aesthetic perception, historical and cultural perception, and critical analysis of student and professional art. Each student is expected to maintain a sketchbook and develop a portfolio. Class fees are required. Students must have at least a "C" average in Art I to take Art II and at least a "B" average in Art II or Art III to take Art III or Art IV respectively. ART I - general, full year, 1 credit. Prerequisite: None. Art I provides an introduction to the fundamentals of art through the elements and principles of design with special significance given to the creation of strong compositions and to the correct use of related vocabulary. Students have the opportunity to complete both two- and three-dimensional projects utilizing a wide variety of materials, techniques, styles, and subject matter. Units include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, pottery, fibers, and calligraphy. ART II - general, full year, 1 credit. Prerequisite: Art I with "C" average. This course is designed to reinforce the basic skills and concepts learned in Art I. Familiar materials and techniques are studied in greater depth and new media and techniques are also introduced. Areas of study include drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, sculpture, and computer art. Students are encouraged to visit galleries and museums and to participate in exhibits and competitions. ART III - general, full year, 1 credit. Prerequisite: Art II with "B" average; consent of instructor. Students enrolled in Art III further refine their skills in all aspects of studio work with more complex projects and more advanced media and techniques. Most activities explore the work of famous artists or art history themes. Formal critiques are utilized as a means of self-evaluation. The course is designed for the serious student of art. ART IV - general, full year, 1 credit. Prerequisite: Art III with "B" average; consent of instructor. Art IV students produce concept-based works requiring synthesis of advanced technical skills, composition, and creativity. Experimentation is encouraged in projects designed to help develop artistic self-awareness as well as a personal style. Students mat and prepare their own work for competitions and exhibits. As greater independence in working is required, only highly motivated students should enroll. ART V - general, full year, 1 credit. Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing, taken in addition to Art III or IV; consent of instructor. Art V offers an opportunity for independent study in selected areas of studio art with the goal of compiling a comprehensive portfolio in preparation for career, college, or art school application. In addition, students are required to submit a six-piece portfolio to the ArtBreak scholarship competition.
FINE ARTS SURVEY - general, full year, 1 credit. Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing. This course is designed to introduce students to the fine arts: drama, dance, art, music and various subcategories of each, such as theater, architecture, photography, and visual art. Students will also experience the arts by visiting art galleries, museums, and attending symphonies, jazz concerts, ballets, operas, plays, etc. for cultural enrichment. Additionally, students will complete assigned projects, such as photography and interior design. Finally, if they are available, community artists will bring their expertise into the classroom. Students will be expected to pay a $9.50 fee for the Scholastic Art Magazine and bear all expenses related to photography project (film, development).
MUSIC The music department strives to teach students cooperation and to practice teamwork through participation in band, orchestra and chorus. One-half or one unit of credit may be given for each subject in the music department each year. BEGINNING BAND - general, full year, 1 credit. This course is designed for the student who has never played an instrument or who has not played extensively. The eventual goal of the beginning band student is to join one of the other ensembles. Any student wishing to participate in beginning band should contact the instructor for information regarding instruments and equipment available for student use. SYMPHONIC BAND/MARCHING BAND - general, full year, 1 credit. This performing ensemble is for students who know how to play an instrument. This ensemble marches at every football game and at a minimum of one competition. Color guard members (flags) must be a member of this ensemble. This ensemble is open to grades 9-12. Any student wishing to participate should contact the instructor for further information. PERCUSSION CLASS - general, full year, 1 credit. This course will explore every aspect of being a percussionist, including keyboard instruments and "accessory" instruments. Percussion students will participate in every marching band performance, as well as every concert performance, in addition to performing a minimum of one concert of their own. STEEL DRUM EMSEMBLE - general, full year, 1 credit. Enrollment for this course is limited to those students in marching band and percussion class. This ensemble meets 7th hour and will be comprised of pans, conga drum, drum set, and other percussion instruments. Students will learn the performance practices of steel drum playing as well as the history of Caribbean music. Enrollment is limited. Steel drum ensemble will be active as a performing ensemble in the community and surrounding areas.
