| The Gator lacrosse team won
the city championship for the second year in a row last night. The Gators
beat Byrd 5-4 in a lightning delayed thriller. The defense came out strong
shutting down the Jacket attack in the fourth quarter. Post season honors
went to Ed Sella - Texas All State Goalie; Jamie Long - Texas All District
Mid-Field; Jay Shaw, Dylan Touchstone, Cody Bass, Ryan King, Harris Griffith

For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community, Captain Shreve Student Council has been awarded a 2008 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils. Captain Shreve is one of only 98 schools nationwide to receive this honor. Rocco Marano, director of NASC made this statement: "Receiving an NASC National Gold Council of Excellence Award indicates a dedication on the part of the local school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program." Jessica Busada is the current student council president. Martha Goza is the student council advisor.

The Captain Shreve Track & Field 2008 Gator Relays was a huge success! The
boys did it again. They finished 1st place overall. Look forwardto seeing this

JROTC participated in the Mesquite Skills Meet with our drill detachment. The
armed drill team finished second in regulation performance out of 33 teams. This
concludes our drill
season. Seven drill meets, 27 trophies for the school year. I am extremely proud
of our kids. They worked extremely hard and achieved great success. We are among
the best in the state and most definitely the best in the parish. I invite you
to our After Action Review (TBD) in order to brief parents and members on state
of our unit at the end of the season. Congratulations Gators!

Captain Shreve engineering magnet freshman student, Nick Oliver, has been
selected to represent northwest Louisiana at the International Sustainable World
Energy, Engineering, and Environmental Project Olympiad to be held in Houston,
Texas during May. The award was presented at the Region I Science and
Engineering Fair. Please join our engineering magnet students in congratulating
Nick for this outstanding accomplishment.
Captain Shreve engineering magnet freshmen, Morgan Harris, won best overall
prize at the annual Centenary Egg Drop "Humpty Fest" held Sunday at Centenary
College.
Side note: Clay Newell, Centenary College freshmen, and a former Captain Shreve
gator won best use of physics in the least mass competition of the Egg Drop.
Congratulations to Morgan, Clay and all who participated in the contest. An egg
drop contest will be held at the Louisiana Boardwalk in the near future. Details
will be forthcoming.
Captain Shreve students won the second place Sweepstakes
Trophy at the science and engineering fair this weekend.
Winner in physics and astronomy were Lauren Boley, first place and Jordan
Berroteran, second place.
Winners in engineering were Nick Oliver, first place, Hunter Waddell, second
place, Elizabeth Conrad, third place and Patrick Wiggins, third place.
David Moeller placed third in computer science. Congratulations to our
participants and winners!
Captain Shreve students received several awards at the Regional Social Studies Fair held at LSUS February 27
Leah Caminker was awarded 1st place in the Geography Individual Division.
Scott Menard was awarded 3rd place in the Geography Individual Division.
Brittany Gray and Kelsey Jones were awarded 1st place in the History Group Division. They also received the Grand Prize Runner Up plaque in the High School Group Division.
Shelby Pennel and Madeline Wilson were awarded 3rd place in the History Group Division.
Leah Dark was awarded 1st place in the Political Science Individual Division.
Libby Fliss was awarded 1st place in the Sociology Individual Division. She also received the Grand Prize Runner Up plaque in the High School Individual Division.
Mary Ellen Kerr was awarded 2nd place in the Sociology Individual Division.

JROTC - Great news from the Louisiana State Drill Championships in
Leesville. Our Armed Color Guard is the State Champion. Our Armed Drill Team
is the State runner-up. More info to follow. Great competition and our kids
looked great. Way to go Gators!
MELISSA PORTER won 2nd place in the Advanced Lincoln-Douglas debate division
and NARGIZ MIKAYILOVA won 3rd place in the Novice LD debate division at the
Acadiana HS "Jour de Fetes" tournament in Lafayette, held Feb. 22 and 23.
Melissa finished the tournament with a record of six wins and one loss, and
Nargiz finished with a four win, two loss record. Both debaters will compete
in the Louisiana High School Speech League's Tournament of Champions that
will be held April 2-5 at Alexandria Senior High. CHELSEA RICH made
semi-finals in Junior Extemporaneous Speaking, and barely missed making
quater-finals in the NLD division.

Captain Shreve engineering students participated in the Sci-Port Engineering Olympics in honor of National Engineering Week. Two teams placed first in their events. Patrick Wiggin’s team consisting of Anthonia Hall, David Moeller, Nick Oliver and Connor Shamburg earned first in Structural Engineering. Freddy Murphy’s team composed of Caitlyn Abney, Connor Randel, Timothy Tate and Nathan Williams finished first in Design Engineering. Congratulations to all our winners.

PRESS RELEASE: Gator Debate Impressive at Parkway---The Captain Shreve Debate and Drama Team won 2nd place in Sweepstakes at the Parkway Debate Tournament held January 25 & 26. Melissa Porter and Chelsea Rich won 1st and 2nd place respectively in the Advanced Lincoln-Douglas debate division. Nargiz Mikayilova won 2nd place in the Novice L-D division. Morgan Cole won 3rd place in Oral Interpretation of Literature, with Keenan Mitchell and Ariel Lathon reaching OI finals, and Adrienne Lamptey reaching semi-finals. Chelsea Rich also competed in the JR. Extemporaneous Speaking finals, while James Scroggins, Clayton Meyers, Amber Winston, and Nargiz Mikayilova made it to Extemp. Semi finals.

The Gator Highline just returned from 4 days at LSU. The girls competed at
the UDA sponsored dance camp both individually, and as a team. I'm proud to
report that all 12 girls received blue ribbons for their 3 routines (36 blue
ribbons) and the team received a trophy and a superior rating. We placed 3rd
with our "Home Routine" (personally I thought we should have gotten 1st). We
will be performing this routine at Camp Gator and at the first football game
- this dance also received a superior rating by the UDA staff. We also won
the sponsor/coach recognition award, a spirit award, and got the travelling
beach ball for being the most friendly and helpful team.
Two girls competed for All Star status - this was a rigorous routine that
included pom, hip-hop, jazz, and a portion choreographed by the girls - both
Brittany Gray (our captain) and Heather Haley (our co-captain) qualified for
All Stars.

Congrats to our track stars. Under the leadership of Coaches Bilbo and Hunt,
our track program is getting better and better.
Captain Shreve's Sugarius Larkin won both the long jump and triple jump at
the state track meet and single handedly gave the CS girls a 10th place
finish. Outstanding job, Sugarius ! Way to go! In the boys meet, Josh Cooper
was 4th in the long jump, Rex Walker was 4th in the 400m, and the Gators
were 3rd in the 1600 relay and finished 13th as a team. Go Gators !

Congratulations to our Adapted Physical Education class and their successful participation in the Special Olympics. Congratulations to the Lady Gators Indoor Track and Field Squad. DeShaylia Plater placed 5th in her heat in the 55-meter dash running a personal record of 8.11. Chelsea Jones placed 8th in her heat running 8.44 seconds. The 4 by 200 relay placed 1st in their heat consisting of DeShaylia Plater, Sugarius Larkin, Chelsea Jones, and Deidre Reddix. Sugarius Larkin placed 6th in the long jump and 4th in the triple jump.

Congratulations to the ROTC Rifle Team. They beat Northwood in the division competition. The final score was 1239 (Captain Shreve) to 1143 (Northwood). The team will be shooting against CE Byrd in the Parish shoot off next week. The individual scores for the Captain Shreve tea m are: Jon Michael Miller-265, Erika Rush-258, Jon Lee-258, Jeremy Johnson-252, and Lauren Reed-206.
Congratulations to Tara Brando. She has been selected Captain Shreve’s 2006-2007 HOBY Ambassador. Chelsea Jones was selected as the alternate. Each year a select group of outstanding sophomores apply for this top honor. The HOBY selection committee chooses one student to represent the school at a regional leadership seminar. As HOBY Ambassador, Tara will participate in this program with other sophomores from north Louisiana. The Hugh O’ Brian Youth Leadership seminars are designed to motivate and develop future leaders. Students will have an opportunity to discuss current topics, learn more about free enterprise, democracy, and service to their community.
Congratulations to the Competition Cheer Squad. This past weekend, they traveled to Denton Texas to compete at the University of North Texas. Not only did the team win the Sr. coed division, they were named Grand Champion for level 4 defeating four really good Texas teams. Go Gators!

Congratulations to the ROTC orienteering team. They participated in a meet this weekend at Lake Claiborne State Park. In individual awards: Nathan Powell placed 1st place in the pole vault, Matthew Schnell placed 2nd in the pole vault and 2nd in the 3200 meter run, John Thomas placed 1st in the 800 meter run and 2nd in the 300 meter hurdles, Kenneth Hughes placed 1st in the 3200 meter run, Joshua Cooper placed 1st in the long jump. In the 4x200 and 4x100 meter relay Brandon Allums, Anthony Jenkins, Joshua Cooper and Kyle Stadtlander placed 3rd overall. In the 4x400 meter relay Anthony Jenkins, John Thomas, Kyle Stadtlander, and Joshua Cooper placed 1st.

Team members are Ambrose Campbell, John Thomas, Josh Cooper, and Kyle Stadtlander. In the Individual Awards; John Thomas placed 1st in the 800 meter run and 2nd in the 300-meter hurdles. John was also named “MVP” Track Performer for the Gator Relays. Captain Shreve students received several awards at the Regional Social Studies Fair held at LSUS on March 2nd. Will Moseley and Carolyn Murphy were awarded 1st place in Economics Group Division. They also received the Grand Prize award plaque for having the best Group project in the High School Division. Nikita Dysktra and Brittany Meredith were awarded 1st place in History Group Division. Melissa Lee and Lindsey O’Brien were awarded 2nd place in History Group Division. Josef Friis and Michael Weileder were awarded 1st place in Political Science Group Division. Erin Kalbacher and Marshall Roberts were awarded 2nd place in Political Science Group Division. Ian Summers was awarded 2nd place in History Individual Division. He also received the Grand Prize Runner Up plaque in the High School Individual Division. Logan Dugard was awarded 3rd place in the Anthropology Individual Division. All of these students who placed first and second qualify for the State Social Studies Fair Competition in May. Ben Smith was recently awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. An assembly was held where Ben was honored with a pin and a certificate. He will attend a luncheon in the spring honoring all recipients. He has also entered the DAR Good Citizens essay Scholarship Contest. Good luck Ben.

Captain Shreve is this year’s winner of the David V.
Middleton Award for Literature. Caroline Putnam and Gabe Aiken had works
published in the 2004-2005 publication of Seedlings. Both were students in Ms.
Elizabeth Harrison’s English classes. Caroline is the first place winner in the
11th grade category.
Captain Shreve senior, Janie Asseff, recently signed a full tennis scholarship
with Birmingham Southern College in Alabama.
Captain Shreve Student Council has given two more scholarships for LASC Summer
Workshop and adopted two more South Louisiana schools that were impacted by the
hurricanes. They have adopted and sponsored Jesuit and Deridder Junior High.
This makes a total of four schools adopted and a total of $1,000 contributed to
the four student councils. To date, Captain Shreve is the only Louisiana school
to give scholarships to hurricane impacted schools.
Carolyn Murphy is Captain Shreve’s winner of the “My Louisiana” essay contest.
Captain Shreve Broadcasting, KGTR, executive producer for the 2005-2006 school year is Scott Hayter. The producers are Jared Williams, Rachael Edmiston, Ben Smith, Jabari Thomas, Ashley Lundsford, and Calvin Gary.
Shreve 2005-2006 National Honor Society officers are president Ben Smith, vice president Caroline Porter, secretary Marilynn Gautreau, and treasurer Travis Cowley.
Captain Shreve Student Council Executive Board members are president Tori Epperson, vice president Caroline Porter, secretary Brian Abrams, treasurer Patrick Plaxco, corresponding secretary Stephanie Ullmer, and parliamentarian Scott Hayter.
Captain Shreve seniors Scott Hayter and Caroline Porter have been named National Merit Semifinalists. They received this honor by taking the 2004 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and scoring in highest range for state of Louisiana. Less than one percent of U. S. high school seniors qualify as semifinalists. They will now compete in the Finalist program to become a Merit Scholar.
Captain Shreve senior Tori Epperson has been named as a semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. This designation is given to Black American high school students who are the highest scoring within their geographic region on the 2004 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. She will now compete for the Achievement Scholarship.
Captain Shreve senior Michael Weileder has been named a Commended Student in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program. He placed among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the 2006 competition by taking the 2004 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Captain Shreve debaters MELISSA PORTER, CAROLINE
PUTNAM, EBONY DAWSON, and RYAN KIRK swept the Novice Lincoln-Douglas debate
division at the Teurlings Catholic High tournament in Lafayette, winning 1st
through 3rd place trophies respectively. In the Advanced Lincoln-Douglas
division, JORDAN HAMIL won 3rd place. This was the first tournament for all four
novice debaters.
Captain Shreve will host this year's Louisiana High School Speech League
"Tournament of Champions" on March 30-April 1. This is the first time the
tournament has been held in Shreveport in the last fifteen years (since Shreve
last hosted it.)
The Lady Gators followed up Friday nights huge football
win with one of their better performances in recent memory Saturday morning. At
Southwood, they took a doubleheader, bashing Logansport 8-1 and STUNNING
Southwood 6-5. In fact, it was the first
time that anyone associated with the program could ever remember beating
Southwood, a dominant AAAAA program.

Congratulations to the Girls Track meet for placing 3rd in the Gator Relays. Simone Green placed 1st in the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meters. Ethel Harris placed 1st in the 100 meters. Jason Beck named The Times 2005 Boys Soccer Player of the Year!!
Who said that defensive players don't get any recognition? Jason Beck proved
them wrong as he completed the sweep of top year end local soccer honors
when he was named 2005 Boys Soccer Player of the Year by the Shreveport Times.
Jason had a wonderful year and led one the strongest defenses in the state.
This marks the 3rd year in a row that a Captain Shreve soccer player has
gotten the Boys Player of the Year award. 2003-Cody Visone, 2004-Jeremy Wimer,
and 2005-Jason Beck. Well done Jason!!!!!!
3 Shreve Girls Named to All State Academic Team
3 Shreve Senior Girls were named to the Louisiana Soccer All State Academic
Team this weekend. Emily Brummer, Amy Norgard, and Rebecca Wisby were honored
by the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association. To be considered
for the team you must be a Senior with a 3.5 GPA. Emily, Amy, and Rebecca also
were all named to the District 1 All District First Team.

Congratulations to Justin Dean who was selected at the state level as one of the final four students at the state level in the U.S. Senate Youth Program. He traveled to Baton Rouge for the interview and test portion of the contest. A luncheon was held to honor the contestants. GET YOUR GATOR PLATE! Specially designed Gator Louisiana vehicle license plates are available from the Special Plate Unit of the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). To obtain your plate, mail the following to the Special Plates Unit, OMV, PO Box 64886, Baton Rouge, LA 70896:
Fees: the fees include a prorated cost for which you will be given credit for unused time on your current plate. Included in the fees is a one-time $25 royalty fee for the school plus a $3.50 handling fee.
A statement that you want the Captain Shreve special plate. Use the name of the person to which the vehicle is registered. NOTE: The plate is transferable to a vehicle that the owner may acquire later.
You may request a specific number from 1-100.

APPLICATION FOR TOPS/FEDERAL AID DUE If you are graduating in 2002, the Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application may be filed after January 1, 2002 and should be received by July 1, 2002 to qualify for TOPS scholarships. Students whose applications are received between July 1, 2002 and August 30, 2002 will be penalized one semester (or two quarters) of eligibility. Students whose applications are received between August 31 and October 30, 2002, will be penalized two semesters (or 3 quarters) of eligibility. Applications received after October 30, 2002 will not be considered. You may apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
