The Gator-Aid, Captain Shreve's PTSA Newsletter won  the State PTA Award of Excellence for five years in a row!

Captain Shreve PTSA

In 1967 a group of interested parents organized the Captain Shreve PTA in the interest of the students, the teachers, and the parents of the school. By establishing the PTA at Captain Shreve, the organization became directly affiliated with the Louisiana State PTA and National PTA and, therefore, shares a common goal-the best possible education for our young people. In 1994, PTA became PTSA, allowing the students to join the organization.

PTSA is directly responsible for presenting:

Each parent and student is encouraged to join the Captain Shreve PTSA. Sources of income are dues and the Gator Focus Fund. We also participate in the Kroger Share Card program. Your support, assistance, and active participation are needed. Everyone can belong to the PTSA-parents, students, teachers, grandparents, individuals with or without children-everyone who cares about children and wants to make that caring count. JOIN THE PTSA AT CAPTAIN SHREVE!

Message from PTSA President, Carolyn Pearce

Happy 2008 to each and every one of you! I can’t believe we are already into another calendar year. The time has really flown by for this school year, but we as a PTSA have so much left to do. The New Year brings many happenings to “The Swamp,” and we hope you will be a part of them.

Debbie Kerr started off the year with plans for Eighth Grade Open House. This is an exciting time for 8th grade students to come and be a part of “The Swamp.” As part of Open House, our PTSA hosted a Counselors’ Luncheon that was held on January 8. Counselors from area middle schools came and received vital information to take back to their schools. Eighth Grade Open House will be held on February 7th at 6:30. Please come and be part of that night and be sure a wear your Gator green and gold. Parent name tags will be provided. This is our night to “SHINE.” As one of the area’s top schools, Captain Shreve has a rich history of superior academics, exceptional athletics, and top-rate leadership opportunities, all within a quality neighborhood school setting. What’s not to brag about?

I would like to offer congratulations to Mr. Willie McPhearson, our Educator of Distinction for 2008. Mr. McPhearson will go on to compete at the district level, and I would like to thank Sharon Parker for coordinating his entry for the competition. Mr. McPhearson will be honored along with our PTSA Member Scrolls and Life Service recipients at the Distinguished Scholars/Founders’ Day Program which will be held on February 20, at 9:45 in the auditorium. We will have a guest speaker and honor special Gator students with exemplary grades also.  M’Liss Sella and Renee’ Petree are busy planning for this event. You won’t want to miss it.

The PTSA, led by Paula Frierson and Mary Beth Wilhite, will honor all of our faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week March 17-20. Please remind your students of this special week set aside to recognize their outstanding teachers.

Our nominating committee will begin working soon. Please let me know by e-mail if you are interested in serving on the board for the 2008-09 year. Captain Shreve offers a future filled with opportunities and a legacy of leadership and learning. Come and be a part of our wonderful school. It is definitely not too late to become involved with the PTSA. If you have suggestions or would like to help, please give me a call. I look forward to seeing all of you in “The Swamp!”

The Captain Shreve Athletic Council is please to announce the "Senior Student-Athlete Award" beginning with the Class of 2008.

The Council voted to approve that one male and one female athlete will receive recognition for their efforts in sport and in the classroom.
They will be recognized at Honor Day, have their name engraved on a plaque to be displayed at Captain Shreve, and receive a one-time award
of $500.

Interested students must apply for this award and submit by April 10, 2008. Requirements for consideration are:

1) must be a graduating senior that will attend college
2) must have a sponsoring coach
3) must have played for at least two consecutive seasons at the JV and varsity level and have been a starter for at least half the varsity
games. Extenuating circumstances that prevent the athlete from competing will be considered.
4) must have two sponsoring faculty members that can vouch for the student's participation in their class (which must be at the level of
Enriched, Honors, or AP) and that they have at least a 3.00 average overall.
5) must submit a 500 word (maximum) essay. Details are described on the application.

The essays will be judged anonymously by an outside committee (not related to the athletic council). The council will then make the final determination of the recipients.

Interested applicants will be able to pick up the application at the front office beginning February 4th. They are to submit their applications to Dr. McCalla.

Any questions about this award should be directed to the Booster Club President, currently Mike Salvatore at mfsalvatore@yahoo.com.

Thank you

Mike Salvatore

From Lisa Paine:

Captain Shreve lacrosse is part of the sports at our school, however, it
is a club sport only, so the funding comes from the team. In addition
to coaches, fees, buses, etc. this year the lacrosse team ordered new
uniforms out of necessity. As you know, these items run into the
thousands for a team. The lacrosse team members and parents are selling
ads that will be distributed at their games. They play Loyola, Byrd,
Magnet, Dallas teams, Lafayette teams and other local teams.

They would appreciate your consideration in buying an ad or forwarding
the information to someone else who would like this opportunity.

From State Superintendent of Education, Paul G. Pastorek:

The Department of Education is creating a Tutoring Hotline leading up to the March LEAP exams for 4th and 8th graders across the state. Every school will soon receive practice books to be taken home by students. Teachers in the 4th and 8th grade should also receive the books. I ask that you recommend that students complete several lessons each night at home leading up to the test.

We will have tutors available to help students who need assistance on those questions from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday from February 1st to March 7th. The phone number is 1-877-453-2721.

You can also direct students to the Department of Education website, www.Louisianaschools.net and go to our LEAP/GEE Help Center for further assistance on the March exams. They’ll find programs such as PASS which provides students with practice questions and online tutorials for each exam. Also, Newton’s Classroom is a fun site that can be used to help students sharpen their math skills.

We will launch a media campaign to publicize this effort across the state and hope that you will help us make sure that all students have access to these practice materials as soon as they are delivered to your schools.

From Mike Salvatore:

The Athletic Council met yesterday evening. Tickets for the upcoming
Spaghetti Dinner to be held from 5 - 6:30 PM just before Back to School
Night on August 30th were distributed to coaches or parent
representatives to most sports. Representatives for gold, boys soccer,
cheer, and danceline are requested for ticket pickup. Please reply to
this email (mfsalvatore@yahoo.com) to make arrangements to pick these
up. All proceeds will go into the athletic council funds which are used
to support financial needs of all teams at Captain Shreve.

At this time the athletic council has two board positions available,
membership chair and fundraising chair. Contact Mike Salvatore if
interested (mfsalvatore@yahoo.com or 780-8914).

Next meeting to be held Tuesday, September 11 at 6:30 in the cafeteria.
All are welcome.
