History of technology in Captain Shreve Library

Captain Shreve Library has been fortunate to have had an 8g Block Grant in 1996-97.  The beginning of a Local Area Network (LAN) was important in that it allowed our school to move into the "Age of Technology".  We had 12 computers on the network in the library and five English classrooms connected to the fileserver and a CD-Rom tower.  Two years ago, Captain Shreve Library had their turn at the Proposition 5 Bond Issue Money which was voted on by the people in Caddo Parish.  We added 6 computer research stations, a Net TV and computer for teaching purposes in the library, and a roving computer and projection system.  We also now have a digital camera and a digital video camera.  While this seems to be a great deal of equipment, it helps, but we still have needs for a school of this size.  We attempt to have 2 classes in the library most days and of course, the most current information comes from our databases provided by the state and parish.

We were able this year to add 8 computers from the vocational education department when they acquired new equipment and this helped greatly.  As we have fund raisers, our goal is to add needed equipment, books, materials and resources that the students can use to complete their work at Captain Shreve.

We are looking to purchase CD burners this year so that as students produce different products they can save them to a CD.  Foundation skills for each curricular area requires that we teach students to communicate their knowledge in various formats and we want to help them do this!

Our word processing center is popular with our students.  Some students do not have access to computers to complete projects and others have printing problems and bring their work to be printed.  We offer Microsoft word and thanks to a computer donation, Microsoft works.

Our plans for the future are big.  As we focus on the future, we look to the accomplishments of the last 2 years.  Room 215 has been incorporated into the library area.  We now inhabit the entire center of the second floor!  Room 215 houses 24 networked computers for the purpose of teaching information skills, working with programs such as PowerPoint, Home Page, and conducting research as well.  Classes use this room for testing practice on SkillsBank and LA Pass.  What a great addition to the Captain Shreve Library.  Library usage is up and so are circulation statistics!  Students are reading and preparing for the future.

Looking to what's ahead.  The Academic Foundation has purchased eight more computers for room 215 for the students to use.  Through the use of library funds, Mrs. Williford and Ms. Elrod added cd burners to each of the new computers in order to allow students who are working on projects in visiting classes to store their work more efficiently.  Thank you, Academic Foundation and all that contributed to this worthwhile activity!

We are hoping to be able to add burners to all computers in the library as funding is available.  For next year, we hope to add Microsoft Front Page for web page design to the computers in the library.  And, as always, we are looking for additional funding for books, books, books, and Accelerated Reader tests.  We would love to have donations of books and especially of credit at Bettye's Books on E. Kings Highway!
