The vocational department offers courses in nutrition, sewing, cooking, home and family management. These courses are designed to help students become functional citizens, homemakers and workers. They also aid in helping students with aspirations for higher education.
FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES I - general, 1 credit. Prerequisite: None (intended for ninth and tenth grade students)
This is a comprehensive course which includes instruction in child development, clothing and textiles, consumer education, food and nutrition, housing, personal development and family relations. Food laboratory experiences will be included. Clothing laboratory is required. Students must furnish sewing materials to complete a simple project.
ADULT RESPONSIBILITIES - general, one semester, ½ credit. Prerequisite: Eleventh and twelfth grade standing
Students in this course learn about the influence of society, economic conditions, and personal values, goals and standards on individual and family management; decision-making skills; financial resource management, including consumer education; interpersonal skills and family relations; parenting responsibilities; and competencies for securing and holding jobs and establishing careers.
NUTRITION AND FOODS - general, ½ credit. Prerequisite: Tenth-twelfth grade standing
In this course, students learn about the basic principles of nutrition, meal planning, preparation and service of simple meals, optimal use of the food dollar, and job opportunities in food-related occupations at the entry level. Food laboratory experiences required.
PARENTHOOD EDUCATION - general, ½ credit. Prerequisite: Eleventh and twelfth grade standing
In this course students will learn about the realities of parenting, parental responsibilities, preparation for parenthood, and about the developing child.
