Captain Shreve softball standout Mikel-Ann Ricardo has a passion for softball and for being a people-person and that personality helped her defeat a field of 12 additional student-athletes in the 37th Times online poll for Athlete of the Week, sponsored by the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.
Ricardo and her supporters wore out their fingers by accumulating 21,618 votes (39.9 percent) of the 54,183 votes cast in the weekly poll for the win. Also making a solid run at the title was Airline softball standout and LSU commit Raelin Chaffin, who garnered 15,632 votes (28.9 percent).
Ricardo is a member of the National Honor Society, Z Club, Student Council, FCA and BETA club at Shreve. The junior-to-be was the starting pitcher for the Lady Gators the past two seasons.
“She is the type of player who wants the ball in high intensity situations, and she has excelled in those situations the past two seasons for us,” Lady Gators coach Mitch Fant said. “I am very excited to see what is to come next season. I hate that our season was cut short because we were playing so well going into our district schedule.”
Ricardo was 6-2 on the mound with 49 strikeouts in 47 innings with a 2.08 ERA in the virus-shortened season.
